Tree Trimming vs. Tree Removal

If you’re staring at a tree in your yard wondering whether it needs a trim or needs to come down, you’re not alone. Most calls we get start the same way: “Something looks off with this tree, but I don’t know if it’s serious.” Here’s how we sort that out, and what you can check yourself before calling anyone.

Most tree problems don’t require removal. If the trunk is solid, the root system looks stable, and the issue is limited to specific branches, pruning is usually the fix.

Common situations where trimming solves the problem:

• Dead or broken branches scattered through an otherwise healthy canopy
• Branches rubbing your roof, gutters, or siding
• Limbs hanging over the driveway, walkway, or growing into power lines
• Crowded or crossing branches inside the canopy that block airflow

A few signs push us toward removal instead of a trim:

• Large cracks or splits running down the trunk — especially near a branch union
• Fungus or mushrooms growing at the base, often a sign of root rot
• A lean that’s gotten noticeably worse over the past year or two
• Hollow sections in the trunk you can hear when you knock on it
• Dieback across more than half the canopy, with no new growth coming in

Location changes the math too. A declining oak 40 feet from your house in an open field is a different situation than the same tree leaning toward your bedroom window. We factor in what the tree could hit, not just what’s wrong with it.

Sometimes a tree has real problems but isn’t an immediate hazard. Maybe it’s leaning slightly, or has some dieback, but the trunk is sound and nothing’s close enough to cause damage if it did fail. In those cases, we’ll lay out the tradeoffs: what trimming buys you, roughly how long the tree has, and what removal costs now versus waiting.

We’ve turned down removal jobs because the tree didn’t actually need it. We’ve also recommended removal on trees that looked fine from the curb but had serious trunk damage once we got close. Either way, you get an honest read on what’s going on and what it’ll take to fix it.
